JOSEPH H. FARRELL is Chairman of Conway, Farrel1, Curtin & Kelly, P .C. He joined the firm in November of 1957 and has been a member since June of 1961. Mr. Farrell practices with the firm’s litigation department and focuses mainly on providing counsel and defense for religious corporations, schools, mental health facilities and foster care agencies against a variety of legal actions, including sexual and physical assault/abuse, premises liability and civil rights violations.
Mr. Farrell is a veteran of the Korean War and received his bachelor’s degree from Fordham University. He then attended New York Law School and was admitted to practice in New York State in 1961. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts of the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for the District of Columbia. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces and the United States Supreme Court. During the Korean War, Mr. Farrell received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star for Valor, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation.
During the Vietnam War, Mr. Farrell served as a Special Hearing Officer for the United States Department of Justice, hearing conscientious objector claims. Mr. Farrell is a former Vice President of the New York State Bar Association, former Chairman of the New York State Conference of Bar Leaders, and President of the Brooklyn-Manhattan Trial Counsel Association of the Lawyers’ Club of Brooklyn. He is currently a member of the House of Delegates in New York State Bar Association and is a past Chairman of the Insurance Negligence and Compensation Law Section of the State Bar. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and serves as a National Director.
Mr. Farrell received the Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the Science of Jurisprudence from the Brooklyn Bar Association in 1992 and also received several awards from the New York State Bar Association, including the John Leach Award.
Mr. Farrell is a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and is a past president of the Catholic Lawyers Guild, Kings County Chapter and a recipient of the St. Thomas More Award. In 1972, he was the CYO Man of the Year. He also received several awards for work in Catholic charities.
Mr. Farrell is a member of the Board of Directors of the Dime Savings Bank of Williamsburgh and is past president of the William M. Casey Foundation of Real Estate Holding Not-For-Profit Corporation. He is also a member of the Heisman Trophy Committee.
